Launching Utah CMO Roundtable

For those who follow my social channels, you may have seen my announcement today about the launch of the CMO Roundtable. Our target attendees are senior marketing and creative leaders in the region. We’ll be meeting on November 7th from 6-8pm at Kiln in Lehi. For those in the region who may be interested, here are the details:

CMO Roundtable Utah Launch Event

From the description:

This is a group for senior marketers and creative leaders along the Wasatch Front, providing an opportunity to discuss marketing strategies and technology, as well as common practices and lessons-learned, in support of their own or client marketing initiatives.

For our launch event, our goal is to do some networking and outline our expectations for the group: topics we’d like to discuss, scope of the group (should we include breakfast meetings, lunch-and-learns, guest speakers, tech demos, etc), and frequency of meetings (monthly, bi-monthly). Come prepared to introduce yourself, share what you know, and make known what you’d like to learn!

There are a couple reasons for starting this local group: for one, I’ve been participating in some virtual groups on Facebook and LinkedIn (check out the Utah Marketing Alliance) focused on marketing experts in Utah, and while the format is great for sharing information and resources, it cannot replace the value of meeting people face to face to network and collaborate.

The other reason is that I did something similar in the late 1990’s and found it to be a fantastic experience, and helped my then-business. I was the co-founder of a CEO Roundtable and participated for about 3 years. As the founder of my own software company which was sold to Rational Software in early 2001, the group was a collection of fellow entrepreneurs and startups in the tech community, sharing ideas and providing moral support (it was started toward the end of the dot com era, so sometimes we needed a shoulder to cry on). In fact, we got a couple mentions in the now-defunct Red Herring magazine, which was cool. 🙂

But the primary underlying reason is that I am a collaboration guy and a connector personality, and want to get out and meet more locals in the CMO role and related spaces. And as marketing people, in-person always trumps online.

Looking forward to the launch, and if you’re in the area and interested in the topic, hope to see you there!
